Staff Spotlight: Get to Know Skylar

Welcome to 2021, Camp Longridge family! We are so excited to see what the Lord has in store for this next year and cannot wait to dive into this new season! We are continuing our staff spotlight series with our Office Manager, Skylar Muse. Grab a warm drink and settle in as we get to know a little more about her and how she ended up all the way out in South Carolina from California!

During Skylar’s sophomore year at Liberty University, she first learned of camp ministry and was hired to work at a camp in Texas teaching kids to ride horses. There, she learned the power of the gospel and its incredible ability to transcend traditional roles of showing people Christ as she put kid after kid onto a horse’s back. The summer of 2016 sparked a fire in her to continue pursuing camp ministry in whatever way she could. Fast forward four years and she is continuing to do what she loves as our new Office Manager!

We recently caught up with Skylar to get to know her, her heart for camp ministry, and how her year has been in the midst of starting at Camp Longridge at the beginning of the pandemic.

What do you most enjoy about working at camp?

S: As a person who loves organization, I thoroughly enjoy the whole reservation process and maintaining the website. Both of these require putting and keeping things in order to create a smooth experience and I love being the person who does that.

What is the most challenging aspect of being an office manager?

S: Because I started my job right before the pandemic, the hardest part for me has been figuring out how to serve camp outside of the normal office manager parameters.

What has been the biggest lesson God’s taught you over this year?

S: I definitely have been learning a lot about what it means to be wholly reliant on the Lord. The pandemic threw everything that I was expecting 2020 to be out the window and caused me to relearn that I’m not in control and God is. Even though I have no idea what the next day will look like, the Lord already knows and will be there to lead me through like He always does.

How did you end up in South Carolina all the way from California?

S: The simple answer is through the Lord’s sovereignty! In the summer of 2019, I left my old camp and moved back home to California to figure out the next step of what I was to do. A few months into being home, Rachel (Logan’s wife and my best friend from college) jokingly texted me asking if I’d apply to be the new office manager and move across the country to live on the East Coast again. Much to her surprise, I texted back in all seriousness asking who I should email my résumé to. Jump ahead a few months and the Lord opened all the doors for me to fill this role and pack up my car, grab my dog Bryce, and drive east into this new adventure in camp ministry!

What was it like starting at Camp Longridge right when the pandemic hit?

S: I can definitely say that this was not one of the things I was expecting as I stepped into this new role of camp ministry! A few weeks after I started and was beginning to get the hang of my main responsibilities, we started getting mass cancellations for retreats and then made the difficult decision to cancel Summer 2020 camps. To say I was disappointed is an understatement. But God used this past year of unexpectedness to show me a different side of camp ministry that I wouldn’t have known or grown to love if COVID-19 hadn’t happened.

What are you most looking forward to with Summer 2021?

S: As great as last summer was with the few weeks with our summer staff and retreat groups, I am really excited to experience what a full Camp Longridge summer is! Summer 2021 is right around the corner and I am so stoked to see what the Lord is going to do.

And, that’s it! We hope that you enjoyed getting to know Skylar and her passion for camp ministry. We are grateful that Rachel sent her that text and she is now a part of the Camp Longridge family!

We continue to be thankful for those who have made financial donations during this very difficult time. The Lord has been so faithful in meeting our needs and if you would like to have a part in these ongoing expenses please click here to donate to Camp Longridge.
